Coffey Family History
This famous Irish surname is recorded in many spellings including O'Coffey, O'Coffie, O'Cohey, Coffee, Coffey, Coshey and Cowhiy. It is an Anglicized form of the pre 10th century Gaelic O' Cobhthaigh, meaning the descendant of "Cobhthaigh", the latter being a tribal personal name translating as "The victorious one", no doubt a reference to a legendary warrior of ancient times. There were three main septs in Ireland making up the clan. The first sept belongs to "Corca Laoidh" or South West Cork, where local pronunciation produced the spelling forms Cowhig and Cowhey. It is claimed that the Cork sept is of the same stock as the great sea-faring clan O' Driscoll, although quite why this should be so is one of the mysteries of Irish mythology...Select Audience

Hi, I have hit a brick wall while researching my husbands ancestry. I have managed to get back to a William Coffey 1818-1898 from Annaghmore Strokestown Roscommon (info mainly from death cert), but I am stuggling to find any more information to go any further back. If anyone is researching the same line, I would love to hear from you.

Hello! My Great Grandmother was Annie Lou Coffey of Lenoir, Caldwell Co. North Carolina. Thomas Coffey who first settled in this area was my 5th Great Grandfather. I have traced the line to County Cork, Ireland to either a Edward Coffey of John Coffey. He was sent to Essex Co. Virginia a an indentured servant or slave. This was in the 1600s. I would love to go to County Cork and research the Coffey history there. Has anyone done this? I have seen the Coffey name in West Meath, Offaly, and Tipperary. As I understand there were more than one group of Coffeys across Ireland.

im very interested to know more about the irish surname coffey. my grandfather clerance w. coffey was also from Lenoir, nc (caldwell county) like a previous commenter has said. i also heard stories of indentured slavery and va. but dont know much to it. im slightly curious if we could be related. he passed when i was younger in 2006 and id love to know more. i know some family names, i know we are irish with thick,curly, red hair haha. i currently reside in morganton.

My grandfather Michael Coffey originated in Cronehill, Carrig, North Tipperary. He was born in 1891.His father was Michael Coffey and his mother was Maria Coffey (nee - Keating). There were twelve children in the family. His sister Katie and his brother Patrick landed at Ellis Island in 1909. Two more of his sisters Bridget and Mary landed at Ellis Island in 1906 and 1902 respectively. Another of my Grandfathers sisters was Margaret, who I know became a nurse in the USA. If you are connected to my family I would love to hear from you, as I know nothing about my relatives lives in the USA. My grandfather and his own children lived in Mill Street, Birr, County Offaly. Looking for my Uncle Kevin who may be going by the old irish (Caoimhin ร Cobhthaigh). Kevin was one of 6 children born to John Coffey and Eva Birtwell (the children thought her name was Holland not Birtwell) They lived in Oswaldtwistle Lancashire Eng and all the siblings were born there except Kevin who was born in Oz. My father Francis Michael was Kevin's oldest sibling. Kevin was a university professor and in the 1970's was living in France. Looking for information about the Coffeys from the Nire valley in Waterford. Itโs not far from Clonmel in Tipperary. My Great Grandfather Thaddeus Coffey may have came from this area before settling in Clonmel were he ran a dairy and public house. He married Catherine (Kate) Connors and they had 10 children. I seem to have hit a brick wall regarding his birth details. Any help would be appreciated.
