MEEHAN Family History
Recorded in several spellings as shown below, this surname is of early medieval Irish origin. It derives from the Gaelic O' Miadhachain, meaning the male descendant of the son of the honourable one! Traditionally, Gaelic family names are taken from the heads of tribes, and were usually prefixed by O' in Ireland, and sometimes Mac, the latter denoting "son of". The main O' Meehan sept was a branch of the illustrious MacCarthys of Munster, but by the end of the 11th Century, they had migrated to County Leitrim, at Ballaghmeehin in the parish of Rossinber. From there they spread into the adjacent counties of Sligo, Fermanagh and Clare...Select Audience

I am looking at our ancestry, my maiden name is Toni Meehan. I have found what I believe to be correct. My 2nd great grandfather was John Meehan married to Catherine Broderick. (From either Sligo or Limerick) Then my 3rd great grandfather John Meehan was born around 1800 in Michelstown Cork and married either Maragaret Connally (from Westmeath) or Bridgett Hannan. And I think his father was John Meehan also born around 1760 in Westmeath. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I could if this information is correct. My sister and I want to plan a trip to Ireland to visit the places our family is from.

I am seeking information on my ancestor John M. Meehan. I am seeking information on my ancestor John M. Meehan, born June 20, 1806. He emigrated to the United States with his son Patrick, age 20, and daughter, Anna, age 18, arriving in the port of New York on the James H. Sheppard in December 13, 1850. He was later naturalized in Boston, MA. In his naturalization records, John stated he was a farmer from Leitrim, Ireland. He had two more children in Boston, Corneilus & David, with an unknown spouse, and then moved to Cincinnati, OH, where he married Winifred Green. John and Winifred also had several children, including Edward, my great grandfather, before his death in 1871. I have no further information on his life prior to his emig
