HANSON Family History
This name can be either a patronymic or a metronymic, meaning it may be derived from the name of the first bearer's father or mother. As a patronymic, it derives from "Han(n)", a Flemish form of John from the Hebrew "Yochanan" meaning "Jehovah has favoured (me with a son)". "Hann(e)" was a very popular christian name in 13th Century Yorkshire, appearing frequently in the 1274 - 1297 Court Rolls of the Manor of Wakefield. The surname from this source is first recorded in Yorkshire in the early 14th Century (see below). As a metronymic, the surname derives from the medieval female given name "Hann", a short form of Hannah from the Hebrew "Chana" meaning "God has favoured me"...Who have we missed?

Hi John, I have only just seen this message so not sure when you posted. David Hanson had a son Thomas in 1824 (born in Tynan, Armagh) and then Thomas married Sarah Carpenter and they had a son David - David junior went to the UK and died in 1900. I can't find any record of who David Hanson b.1800 married so I'm not sure who Thomas's mother is. I know there is a David Hanson and James Hanson in the 1796 Flax Growers list from Tynan and either of these could be my David Hanson's father. It really is a mystery to us - I also have a cousin in the US who is desperate to find more about David and his family before 1800. One thing that really amazes me is how strong the genes are through my family. While I don't have a picture of David (1800
Hi, Christina Murphy, I would like to help you learn more about your Hanson relatives from Armagh. What information do you have. John Hanson
My Hanson relatives are from Armagh and I would like information on them prior to 1800. The earliest record I have found so far is 1796 but I'm sure they were in Armagh long before that. David Hanson is my great x 3 grandfather. I would like to know where they came from before they got to Ireland
